In 1990, the Vienna Insurance Group became one of the first Western insurance companies to make a move into the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Since then, the Vienna Insurance Group has continuously expanded its involvement in the region in pursuit of its goals. The importance of a broad geographical market base becomes particularly clear during difficult economic times. The differences in economic momentum among different countries combined to have a balanced effect on the Vienna Insurance Group.

The figures for the Vienna Insurance Group in recent years document that it has successfully implemented its strategy. The Vienna Insurance Group’s premiums grew by an average of approximately 11% per year for the period 2005–2010, which is even exceeded by profits before taxes, which grew by an average of 16% per year for the same period. The Vienna Insurance Group profited from its early commitment to the CEE markets, which – over and above a corresponding premium growth – is now already making a solid contribution to profits. More precisely, premiums written in the CEE region during the 2005–2010 period rose by an average of approximately 22% per year and pre-tax profits during the same period rose by approximately 22% per year as well.
The business model, broadly diversified by country, distribution channel and product, is continuously influenced and shaped by the experience and solid market knowledge of the Vienna Insurance Group. The Vienna Insurance Group has the expertise to selectively take advantage of insurance business opportunities. This will enable further growth to be achieved both in premiums and, combined with the conservative investment strategy followed by the Vienna Insurance Group, the earnings of the Group.

The Group’s broad geographical base in Central and Eastern Europe and the top positions it holds in many markets allow its approximately 25,000 employees in 25 countries to take optimal advantage of the opportunities and great growth potential presented by Europe. The challenge of maintaining and further expanding this position as the overall number 1 in our core markets is our driving force and objective for the future.
